Ryan Not Even

We were learning about the choices authors make to create images in our mind about characters, settings and emotions. We had to find some keywords in the text, create an image and describe any of the following;, how a character may have felt, how, a character may have looked, what a character may have thought, or the setting.

Aquilla's Punctuation Writing.

WALT edit another author's writing.
WILF
I will read the writing aloud.
I will listen to how I read, when I stop I will know that I need a full stop. When I pause or find a list I will insert a comma.

Chopper
Construction
Test Drive
Crash
Do you know what a chopper is?  I bet you think it is a tool for cutting. Well you’re wrong; When I was young it was the coolest bike around. It had three gears, a banana seat, a normal size wheel on the back and a small wheel on the front.  They were also very expensive and there was no way that my parents could afford one, so my cousin’s and I decided to make our own.
It was quite a simple and ingenious idea we came up with to construct our own chopper, using my 2 wheeler and my little sister’s 3 wheeler. My bike already had a banana seat and there was nothing we could do about giving it gears, but we could give it the look. We simply took one of the back wheels off my sister’s bike, which was smaller than my wheels and put it where my front wheel should have been.
“Whoa that looks flash” said my cousin James. “Giz a ride, I’ll take it for a test drive” he demanded. I wasn’t to keen on him having the first ride, because it was my bike and all of the tamariki in the Whanau knew that James could break any toy in about 2 minutes flat. Too late, he plonked his fat bottom on the seat and was off.
“Hey come back”, I yelled as he disappeared around the corner of the house. My cousins and I were soon in pursuit. As we rounded the corner of the house we were greeted with the sight of our fat cousin sprawled on the grass, crying, and holding his leg. It seems he was unaware that when you put a small wheel on the front of a bicycle, cornering is very difficult.

Reflection:
In room 8 we have been learning about placing our punctuation in the right places in a story,  In this piece of writing I think I did well placing my full stops and capital letters in the right place. I think I need to improve on the use of my commas next time.

In our class we have been learning how to add the correct punctuation into sentences and paragraphs. I have highlighted the ones that I didn't add in, and corrected with the marking sheet.

I think that I did full stops and capital letters really well as I didn't need to correct them with the punctuation sheet. I also think I need to work on my commas. I think I did really well on this activity and learnt a lot from it.

Aniheras Home Animation

This is my stop motion animation I did at home it’s about 3 monsters the first two hated each other at the start and drowned the small one and they had a little monster talk and became best friends The third monster kinda welcomed them into the house with a wand.
The amazing thing about this for me was that it all started when I asked Tania (our Manaiakalani facilitator) for the recipe for playdough.  I wasn’t familiar with cream of tartar so at lunch time she went and bought some for me.
I went home and made some playdough.  Then I made this stop motion animation. I showed my family and they thought it was cool.
I think I did the animation well, especially for my first full solo animation.

Jordan's writing about hiding

We were doing a writing test and it had to be a time when we were hiding.

I think I write more than I usually write.

I think maybe next time I could put more punctuation in the right places.

“Ouch” as I bellyflop into the pool hiding from my mum and dad holding
my brief breath choking on water. As they walked around the pool looking for me some bubbles came up. It was starting to get cold so I slowly come back up I creeped out
of the pool and slowly sprinted up the stairs. To get a towel then I start to get so
hungry but my mum and dad were still looking for me then I got bored so I went and
told them where I was hiding from them.

I saw my mum on the bacne I walked over to her and scared her I told her I was in the pool holding my breath when you went passed. Ha mum can you make something to eat
5 mins later “that was yum thank you mum can you make me some more please” I said “ok” she replied.

Aquilla's Presentation About Sonny Bill Williams.

Ryan's All blacks Vs France Recount

WALT:
We had a writing test and it had to be a recount so I wrote about my family and I watching the All Blacks thrash the French.
I think I write the most that I have ever write in that amount of time.
I think I could work on my punctuation and try to add more next time.

On the 17th of October 2015 the All Blacks were playing France in England for the rugby world cup and it was the quarterfinals it was 8:00pm but here in New Zealand it was 8:00 o’clock in the morning. And my family and I were in our lounge watching the most intense game. That I had ever seen the whistle had blown and Dan Carter kicked the ball and one of the all blacks had sprinted up and stole the ball.

After 5 minutes of tackling a french had taken the ball and a player tried to kick the ball but Brodie Retalic Charged it down and scored a try everyone in my family jumped up and yelled so loud someone on the moon could hear us, then Julian Savea scored the best try I have ever seen in my life first he bunted off 1 French player and then he bunted off another and then he flattened another player and slammed the ball over the try line and I just screamed my head off I was so happy.

35 minutes later it was halftime and all blacks had the lead 29-13 and my family and I were all very nervous to see how the game will turn out. After half time my family and I were ready, it was about 10 minutes into the game when and I just screamed my head off I was so happy.

Later on Maa Nonu smashed through the Frenches line and was going to score a runaway try when he knocked the ball on and everyone in New Zealand that saw that probably yelled so loud their roofs came off, but then the whistle blew and it was full time and I was very happy to see how the game turned out.

SHAKE OUT

Today we participated in the New Zealand Shake Out.  This happened at 9.15 this morning.
We practiced drop, cover and hold.

To make things slightly more authentic we identified hazards in our class and placed them where we thought they would land in an earthquake.

We did not move our furniture, we only moved books and unsecured objects.

This was bad enough!

We were lucky that we didn't experience a real earthquake and we were able to put things back in order quickly

Mikah's epic elephant enclosure

I read a text about elephants and I learned what they need in an elephant enclosure.  They need water, trees for  shelter, mud for relaxation and cooling down.  They need a warm sleeping place that does not have concrete, otherwise they will get infections in their feet.  This what made the last elephant in the zoo really sick and then it had to be put down. I thought about what they needed first and then I imagined it in my mind, which gave me the ideas for drawing.  Then I drew it on paper and used the I pad to capture it.

Technology Reflection at Moerewa School 2015

Being a senior, I was given an extra subject called ‘technology’.  I would go to Moerewa School with the rest of my class almost every Friday.  There was two different classes, Mr Edwards was the teacher of Woodwork and Miss Bowles was the cooking teacher.

In woodwork I made a Maori Patu,  I also learnt that I had to always wear shoes, not jandals because it’s not safe.  There is a lot of heavy machinery and sharp tools, and you could get really hurt if something sharp or heavy fell on your feet.

In cooking I made a lot of food, But most of my food got thrown out because there was rules in the cooking class and if you broke them, Miss Bowles would throw it out.  I also learnt how to work a stove for the first time in my life, that’s a good thing because I will have to learn how to use one when I am an adult.

Maybe next year I could try and learn how to do what I am told, so I don’t miss out on learning new stuff.

By Iesha.

In our woodwork class the first lesson we had was about safety, the names of the machines and tools and how you used them. Listening to Mr E was very important as we had to follow his instructions so that we didn’t injure ourselves and others. This was the same in cooking because we had to know exactly what we had to use otherwise our recipe would a failure and this would be a waste of food.

Cooking with Whaea Dot was fun. We were making lots of different foods. I learnt  a lot of life skills because now I can make my own dinner when I leave home, plus I won’t chop off my finger when I’m cutting or dicing up food.

I really liked technology because it’s where I can make things I like. I mostly liked woodwork because once I know what I want to make, I can just draw it and then I would show Mr E and I will ask him nicely for the materials and tools I need. Mr E would get the materials and then I would focus on my work projects until I have finished. I really enjoyed woodwork because I would just go into my own world; design my creations and build them.

My learning highlights, was when I made my wooden jet. I liked it because it was a challenge to make in four days. It was also a pleasure to have Whaea Dot and Mr E teaching me their different knowledge about food and creations because this subject helps me to problem solve.

By Ryan

In the first ten weeks of technology I attempted cooking with Whaea Dot and in the second ten weeks I built objects out of wood, and metal with Mr E. The learning that took place was using all the equipment and machinery and building different types of projects and cooking different types of food. Technology is one of the  best subjects that I enjoyed in my education curriculum.

The skills that had been taught to us are to prepare us for the future. We learnt to listen and respect our teachers and to act safely around tools and cooking equipment. These skills will be with me so I can use them as an adult. Another reason these skills are important  because I never listen to my family and siblings/sometime’s teachers and I need to use this important skill if I want to be employed.

I was happy with our last session of cooking and I was very happy with the final outcome because my lasagne tasted and smelt nice. Even my teacher wanted to eat it.

In the end I was glad we had an opportunity to go to technology at Moerewa School because at other schools, they don’t go to technology.

By Anihera

On Fridays, my class and I had technology in Moerewa.  My first class was woodwork and I spent ten weeks in that class, then swapping over to cooking for the last 10 weeks.

The first ten weeks in woodwork was good, I learnt how to use my imagination to create and I also I learnt how to think more and more which gave me great pieces of end work.

I had no idea that I could be so creative in cooking and in woodwork. Mr. E made us think, he made us create our own projects. I learnt that I could make anything that popped up in my head.

But  then in cooking I also really enjoyed myself, because I loved the fact that Whaea Dot, sometimes made us complete test, for example, we needed to invent something that would taste nice, and also had a good range of nutrients. So in one of my tests I decided to make a sort of spaghetti pasta with bolognese and homemade sauces. Yummy! It turned out delicious.

So maybe if another day I get a chance to go to woodwork and cooking, I would definitely go and learn more about this subject. I really appreciated Mr. E and Whaea Dots time as they taught me new skills that I will need as an adult. As a matter of fact in life when you leave home you eventually cook for your family and you will always have to repair something too. So I really did enjoyed going to technology.

By Nicole

My first couple of weeks in woodwork and cooking with whaea Dot and Mr Edwards was marvellous! I appreciated the use of facilities and the opportunities I was given to use them. I am grateful that I had the learning facilities to help me to produce amazing work. I learnt that these classes would help me to become a more proactive person with these specific tools in my daily life.

Throughout woodwork and cooking I have learnt  how to build, measure  and even to cook! I think that going to technology is going to help me become a successful person because I have learnt the life skills that we need to know. I have evaluated what I need to know, also I have learnt how to use equipment properly and know the names of them.

I was very satisfied with the work that I produced, I didn't think that I could do this but with the determination from my teachers and myself, I had presented some really good artistic projects, like my breakfast tray, letters, chimes and the best food I made was homemade pasta from scratch. I was really proud that I could build or even produce something amazing and to me it was mind blowing. I was happy with the lessons that I got taught, even my mum was very proud of me and even said, ‘’did you really make that?”

In my last technology class, I had a few highlights they were, working as a team learning how to recraft old things to new. I learnt how to be careful and safe around equipment. Thank you Whaea Dot and Mr E, I've learnt so much using all the technology equipment and machines.

By Taimana

During the first ten weeks of Technology, we started off with Cooking classes and our teacher was Whaea Dot. In our second ten weeks of Technology, we went to woodwork classes, our teacher was Mr E/ Mr Edwards. We learnt how to cook and create amazing workshop projects. We learnt how to do this because it took a lot of skills in listening and working with equipment and machines. Having to learn these skills prepares us for the future.

In cooking classes and woodwork classes we learnt a lot of valuable life lessons such as, problem solving, cooking, safety, teamwork and understanding processes by following instructions and recipes. But there were three  life skills that stood out to me the most, and that was evaluating what I had created, listening and teamwork skills.

At the end of Technology I was very happy with my final lesson and the outcome of cooking lasagne and making a surfboard and a surfboard holder. By using my problem solving skill I was able to fix up some of the mistakes I had made during our cooking and woodwork classes.
In the last term of technology I had a few learning highlights, they were:
  • Learning new future focused skills.
  • Cooking food creatively.
  • Learning to work as a team.
  • Creating amazing wooden and plastic objects.
